A Barn in the Middle of Nowhere

The man sat in a barn. It was 12 miles away from the nearest house and in the middle of a completely unremarkable landscape – well, unremarkable apart from the 7 tanks, 3 helicopters, and 11 army trucks circling it.

The Mind Project tracked brain waves and scrutinized the population for signs of gifted individuals. 5 hours ago it had caught a signal from this exact barn that couldn’t possibly have been human – except it was. It was coming from the man sitting inside the barn.

The perfect test subject.

He could replace all 237 subjects they had locked up in their special research facility in the Mojave desert. A research facility that was, for the first time in its 17 years of existence, being breached. A young girl was walking through it. Walking past each cell and each test room. As she walked by, the test subjects disappeared. One by one they vanished and slowly, as if in a haze, the researchers and guards began to realize their life’s work was disappearing right before their eyes. Yet they felt a languid comfort and remained as they were. 537 people, who were working on perhaps the greatest project of their times, and not one seemed eager to raise an alert.

“What do you mean you can’t go any closer?”

The General shouted above the noise of the Helicopters. He didn’t wait for an answer. He turned and walked back to his Jeep and called up the President he hadn’t voted for. The President was clear about what had to be done. The General was fuming as he gave the orders.

The tanks all fired at the same time. The man in the barn smiled and guided each shell in a playful arc. He then brought them to a stop in mid-air and let them hover.

As the girl reached the last remaining test room, the most valuable current test subject of The Mind Project fought whatever it was that had whisked away all his fellow test subjects. She pouted and tried harder – but failed to affect the man. She knew she was out of time. She threw a bunch of angry thoughts at the man and then just vanished.

The man in the barn stood up slowly.

“You were always a stubborn one Vitali.”

The man closed his eyes and wished himself away. The tank shells fell to the ground in a rough circle.

A House in the Middle of Somewhere

She rushed to the door. It was her husband. He had that wry amused look on his face. As if he knew just how much she’d missed him. After a kiss and a hug she walked him to the living room and pointed out their daughter.

“She’s been staring out that window all day”.

Their daughter turned and smiled a half-smile. She looked at her father and he read the question. He didn’t have an answer.

He had thought he’d get to see his brother after 17 years. He’d thought wrong.
